"I Wrote Better Houses, Better Living to help people get better homes for the hard-earned money they spend on them!"

What makes a user-friendly home?

Ask Myron Ferguson: Since 1990, he has evaluated more than 2,800 homes in his quest to identify and describe what people should look for before they build or buy a home.

The result is Better Houses, Better Living, companion piece to his first book on the same subject, Build it Right! This book sold more than 30,000 copies nationwide.

Whether the home is a custom-built palace or a simple tract home, Better Houses, Better Living describes how design elements and systems integration make a house user-friendly.

“Too often, the details are for the convenience of the builder, rather than the convenience of the family living in the house,” Ferguson explains. “It’s not supposed to work that way.”

Better Houses, Better Living is the culmination of 12 years of research: More than 350 pages and 450 images leads the reader through a comprehensive analysis of what makes a user-friendly home.

“I believe the standards of what makes a home ‘user-friendly’ can and should be improved. This book helps the home buyer learn what to look for – as well as what to do, and what not to do – so that he or she ends up with a home that is both attractive and highly livable,” Ferguson says.

An engineer by training, Ferguson is a Life Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Prior to his retirement in 1990, he helped bring satellite communications to the world. He helped implement the first satellite stations on five continents.
